Professor Eddy is a dutch DJ who has worked for several local radio stations - most recently Laid Back Radio - who describes his style as 'intimate funky soul'. His wonderful mixes can be found on his mixcloud profile and on his blog, and come highly recommended. This is Professor Eddy's: Life In Songs click to listen Musiq Soulchild – Dear John (2008) One of the best soul singers of the moment is Musiq Soulchild. This is a superb track from his album ‘Onmyradio’ that came out in 2008. I like the telephone messages on it. They are dramatic, but funny too, somehow. When his girlfriend is mad at him on his voice mail, Musiq only says ‘Oh no’ to himself, but is not willing to do anything… click to listen Imagination – So Good, So Right [12”] (1981) One of the first albums I bought as a young teenager was ‘In the heat of the night’ (1982) from Imagination. This is from their debut album ‘Body talk’. I love their slick, sophisticated disco sound. Their piano loops have been copied on house records many times. click to listen Mistral – Starship 109 (1978) Mistral is a space disco project from Dutchman Robbie van Leeuwen who wrote ‘Venus’ for Shocking Blue, a number one in the US in 1970 (and for Bananarama in 1986). You can hear him play Spanish guitar on this track as well. This is one of my all-time favourites. click to listen Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons – The Night (1972) Sixties pop icon Frankie Valli went to Motown in the early seventies and recorded a couple of songs, including the almost paranoid sounding ‘The night’. He was not successful and Motown gave him the sack. Thanks to British northern soul dj’s the song became a top ten hit a few years later. French dj Pilooksi re-edited ‘The night’ very successfully a couple of years ago . click to listen Mantronix – Do You Like… Mantronik? (1988) The first hiphop album I bought back in the day was ‘In full effect’ by Matronix, although it is more electro than hiphop, actually. A ground-breaking track, though. Nowadays Kurt Mantronik is a dance producer and had a hit record a couple of years back (‘How did you know’). click to listen Mayer Hawthorne – No Strings (2012) Mayer Hawthorne is a funny guy and a great live performer. I shook his hand a few years back! I like his fresh interpretations of modern soul. This one is from his latest album ‘How do you do’ and his new single too.
