Mix 49 is packed with funky goodness, and constitutes at least one of your 'five a day' (daily doses of funk that is, although you really should have more).

We enjoy 7th Wonder, Bar Kays, The Reddings, Kilo and Raydio for the first time, and wallow in the brilliance of Prince, T-Connection, Muscle Shoals Horns, Martin Solveig and the Brothers Johnson.

I know what you're thinking, it's all very well having a playlist for those in love, but what about those out of love? Well, good point. Seeing as that's probably about half the world, best make an effort to soothe their souls huh. Here's our collection of funky & soulful grooves to deliver just the thing...

This week we had the pleasure of experiencing Tower of Power live as they celebrated 44 years of making music. We were treated to nearly two hours of horn-heavy soul music including Tower of Power hits such as 'Soul Vaccination', 'What Is Hip?', 'Just Enough and Too Much' and more.

Front-man Larry Briggs's vocals were outstanding and we particularly enjoyed his powerful rendition of 'Me And Mrs. Jones'. The horns section, made up of Emilio Castillo, Stephen Kupka, Tom E. Politzer and Adolfo Acosta, was right on the money and a joy to the ears.

Not many music bands stick around for 4 decades and continue to tour, playing at such a high level. Tower of Power is a rare beast and long may it continue to roam the earth!

Check out this video from the gig, and visit our YouTube channel to watch even more!

Mix Forty Seven brings some fresh funky stuff from Gil Scott Heron, Lenny Kravitz, Ritual and Instant Funk. These newcomers are joined by A Taste of Honey, Tower of Power, Banda Black Rio, Chic, Patrice Rushen and Cameo. Mix Forty Seven is bang on the one.

This mix includes Tower of Power and Cameo, two bands we're going to see perform live over the next few months. Check back here next week to check out videos from the Tower of Power gig. I'm afraid you'll have to wait until July for Cameo videos. It's always nice to have something to look foward to though, right!

Here's a great new release available from Juno Downloads, it's Osibisa 'Black Magic Night' recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall.
Picture
Solid musicianship throughout this record and it includes a live rendition of their famous hit 'Sunshine Day'. Also, the sound quality is excellent (sometimes the sound isn't the best on live recordings).

For as little as £5.99 (192 bit rate) it's a bargain! Although I'd recommend the 320 bit rate for £7.49!

We've put together a playlist of funky & soulful ways to express your love this valentine's day. Or indeed, every day. Enjoy.
