Anna is a VibeRide fan. She works in education and makes jewellery. She sells online and her website can be found at www.acampbell.info I think that Jazz-Funk music is best enjoyed live so I’ve decided to choose songs that I find particularly memorable from live performances I’ve seen. Nights over Egypt performed by Incognito This is a fantastic song and I will never forget Incognito playing it live at IndigO2 for their 30th anniversary show. I have never heard so many strong women singing in one room before. Imaani, Joy Rose, Maysa and others were joined by Jocelyn Brown. Just to see Maysa and Jocelyn Brown batting that song back and forth was absolutely mind blowing. Higher Ground by Stevie Wonder I am fortunate to have seen Stevie Wonder perform three times. We travelled up to Birmingham to see him play on my birthday and was thrilled that he actually sang Happy Birthday! So I can say that Stevie Wonder sang happy birthday live on my birthday. I had seen him in London on the same tour and he hadn’t played it then so I felt doubly blessed. I’ve chosen Higher Ground because it is my favourite Stevie song. He is still tireless on stage and a joy to see perform live. Love Foolosophy by Jamiroquai I have seen Jamiroquai three times. The most memorable performance was at the Jazz Cafe where we were fortunate to win tickets to see them perform songs from their latest album Rock, Dust, Light, Star. It is very unusual to see Jamiroquai in such a small venue now (I’ve also seen them at Hyde Park which is a bit bigger!). At the Jazz Cafe the band hardly fit on the stage and the backing singers had to stand on the stairs! Jay Kay doesn’t like performing Love Foolosophy anymore but I think it’s a great tune. Uptown Up by Maceo Parker Gary and I arrived very early to see Maceo Parker at the Jazz Cafe in London once. We stood right by the stage and saw first hand the amazing skill of he and his band. Dennis Rollins was playing with them and I was standing so close to him he had to manoeuvre his trombone around my head every time he brought it up to play! The Jazz Cafe is a great small venue to see bands up close and personal. Walk Right Now by The Jacksons Technically I have not seen the Jacksons or Michael Jackson live. I was very excited when I got good tickets to see Michael Jackson at the O2 but unfortunately it was not to be. Whatever is said about Michael Jackson and his personal life he consistently put out good music for decades and that is what I will remember. I love this disco tune from the Jacksons that you don’t hear played that much. Sleeptalking by Level 42 I saw Level 42 at IndigO2 and was really excited when they played Sleeptalking, one of my favourites. I love the explosive bass in this song and enjoyed seeing Mark King play it on his light-up bass.
