Mix Ninety Three features the Brand New Heavies, Kraak & Smaak, Hot Chocolate, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Herbie Hancock, Nik West and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
It also features an amazing live recording of an improvised performance by some jazz-funk legends on the accapella version of Billie Jean by Michael Jackson - with Billy Cobham on drums, Jean Paul "Bluey" Maunick on guitar and Marcus Miller on bass. Trust me, it's great. (The audio comes from a video made by Alessio Bertallot, in MIlan in 2011 at the RAI (national radio), which was directed by Marco Ligabue. The video was originally posted by Lord Blac Music on his Facebook page, so thanks to him.)
As well as all that there's a tip of the hat to David Bowie who passed away this month with the Reflex's revision of Golden Years, a cover version of Fashion by the Sunburst Band and extended versions of a couple of funky Bowie classics including Let's Dance. Stick around until the end of that to hear a wonderful anecdote from Nile Rodgers about working with Bowie on that early 80's hit.
